No evidence that horn trimming affects white rhinoceros horn use during comfort behaviour and resource access

چکیده
Abstract Rhino species use their horns in social interactions but also when accessing resources, rubbing and interspecific defence. The current poaching crisis has seen southern white rhinos ( Ceratotherium simum ) increasingly dehorned as a conservation management practise, few studies have evaluated whether the procedure any behavioural effects. This study sought to document describe horn-contingent behaviours during resource access, wallowing freeranging establish dehorning, known horn trimming, impacts on frequency or function. Data were collected through camera trapping field observations at two sites South Africa. results provide no evidence that dehorning disrupts digging mineral consumption suggests is unlikely strong biological impact access. Furthermore, of horn-rubbing did not appear be influenced by levels growth. limited these aspects species’ ecology provides support can employed tool reduce populations rhino.

Intraperitoneal administration of an aqueous extract of rhinoceros horn at 5, 2.5 and 1 g/ml, showed a significant antipyretic effect in rats with hyperthermia induced by subcutaneous injection of terpentine oil. Similar assays with extracts of the horns of saiga antelope, water buffalo and cattle at 5 g/ml also caused a significant drop in fever; however, at 1 g/ml, only saiga antelope horn pr...

متن کاملHorn Complements: Towards Horn-to-Horn Belief Revision
Horn-to-Horn belief revision asks for the revision of a Horn knowledge base such that the revised knowledge base is also Horn. Horn knowledge bases are important whenever one is concerned with efficiency—of computing inferences, of knowledge acquisition, etc. Horn-to-Horn belief revision could be of interest, in particular, as a component of any efficient system requiring large commonsense know...
متن کاملA Horn Clause that Implies and Undecidable Set of Horn Clauses
In this paper we prove that there exists a Horn clause H such that the problem: given a Horn clause G. Is G a consequence of H ? is not recursive. Equivalently, there exists a one-clause PROLOG program such that there is no PROLOG implementation answering TRUE if the program implies a given goal and FALSE otherwise. We give a short survey of earlier results concerning clause implication and pro...
متن کاملDefinability of Horn Revision from Horn Contraction
In the AGM framework [Alchourrón and Makinson, 1985], a revision function can be defined directly through constructions like systems of spheres, epistemic entrenchment, etc., or indirectly through a contraction operation via the Levi identity. A recent trend is to construct AGM style contraction and revision functions that operate under Horn logic. A direct construction of Horn revision is give...
